Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Many minimum wage workers have to pick up a second, sometimes even a third job, just to survive;
  • An unsustainable wage violates Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, “the right to life, liberty and security of the person”; and
  • Many minimum wage workers worked through the pandemic because they were deemed essential, not just for the sake of their own survival.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Implement a national living wage that would match the reality in each locality’s economy, for example, the city of Toronto’s living wage would be different from that of Vancouver’s;
2. Prioritize the dignity, mental, and physical health of Canadian wage earners, especially for those who have been deemed essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic; and
3. Increase the living wage every three years in order to reflect the annual inflation rate.
